Need for renovation – more pleasant sensory experience and soft light in the toilet space with indirect LED strip lighting
Before the renovation, the small toilet was well lit, but the space was dull. No thought had been given to interior design until the idea of using a Luna wood Triple Shadow trim panel left over from another renovation came up. The amount of rim panels was just the right amount to give the toilet a new look. When more material was added to the wall surface, the possibility opened up to create an elegant space with indirect LED strip lighting.
Indirect LED strip lighting in general adds a sense of calm and softness to spaces, creating an ambience that is more pleasant to the senses. At the start, the toilet had a single light panel on the ceiling, but the lighting renovation gave the space a softer look.
The lighting was designed with a lot of indirect CCT LED strip and a large light mirror.
In the toilet area, it was decided to implement lighting entirely with indirect LED strip lighting. There was no need for spotlights, as the space is not, for example. trim or shave your beard. Soft general lighting with indirect light sources was achieved by installing light around the room as a whole. A total of 6.5 metres of CCT (changeable colour temperature) LED strip was installed along the edges of the new wall and ceiling panel in grooves machined into the back of the panel. 1.3 metres of LED strip was installed below the floor level. The 800 mm diameter colour temperature adjustable MOON mirror is surrounded by 2.5 metres of LED strip.
If this luminous flux, or lumen output, were perpendicular to the room, the room would be 5800 lm /1.6 m2 = 3600 lux, far too bright, but the light from the wall and floor reflections would balance out the lighting in the centre of the room, at around 300 lux.
In the space, light is brought in through corners and nooks, making the space feel bigger than it is. Interestingly, the lighting priorities are in slightly different directions from what is traditionally the case. A large light mirror has been added to the wall to brighten up the wall and open up the space. The floor level has also been illuminated with an LED track and a strip of beach pebbles has been placed underneath to catch the eye. The floor and three walls of the toilet were left white, which gives a good reflective surface for indirect light.
LEDs and other products used in renovation
All LED strips, drivers and controllers as well as the light mirror are from LedStore’s own collection.
Wall and ceiling lighting with LED strip in aluminium profile with wireless controller
6.5 metres of 24V 7.2 W/m CCT LED strip illuminates through the walls and ceiling and circulates around the space. A black, low profile surface was used to protect the LED strip and smooth out the spottiness of the LEDs. Based on the total power consumption of the LED strip, a 50W ZigBee power supply was chosen as the power supply for this light, and a wireless P1CCT ZG button was chosen as the operating switch, which allows infinitely variable adjustment of both the colour temperature and brightness of the white light.
Below-grade monochrome LED strip in aluminium profile with motion sensor control
The indirect LED strip lighting also provided the space with night lighting. Below the level, 1.3 meters of 24V 7.2 W/m 3000K LED strip illuminates the floor, and a 24V 20W driver was sufficient for the power supply. The lights are conveniently controlled on and off by a micro-sensor with motion and twilight sensors. The transformer and microsensor fit neatly under the level of the AP10 mounting box.
Wall mounted light mirror MOON 800 CCT
MOON 800 CCT was chosen as the light mirror. The mirror light is operated by the touch buttons on the surface of the mirror. There are three colour temperature options for light, warm, neutral and cold. In addition, the mirror’s power switch has a dimming function. The third switch controls the heating function of the mirror. This de-fogging function is practical in saunas and bathrooms where mirror surfaces steam easily.
Other renovation materials and furniture
The main idea was to use Luna wood Triple Shadow 32X140 mm rim panel as a decorative element in the small space, which was installed in the space of 3m2. On the back wall of the hand-washing area, and from there to the entire ceiling surface with the help of a yaw angle, this beautiful so-called. the valerian panel.
40 mm thick pine glue board was chosen as the wooden planks, sawn to the correct dimensions and treated with black wood wax, and flush-fitted to the wall panel.
The hand basin was a beautiful black Interia 360X180X90mm natural stone sink and the tap was a black Damixa Silhouet. A plywood tray was purchased from Ikea, which was treated with the same wood wax. A beautiful strip of grey beach stones was placed under the platform and edged with a metal strip. The floor is light-coloured vinyl laminate. The toilet seat was also replaced.
Execution of surface renovation and installation of indirect LED strip lighting
The renovation started by preparing the trim panels to the correct dimensions and sawing grooves for the aluminium profiles. Luna Triple Shadow is made from non-toxic heat-treated wood, so working with it in the yard was worry-free.
The thickness of the rim panel is 32 mm, so it was easy to make the grooves 1 cm deep. Slots were made in the panel for the LED rails, so that the light would be completely hidden behind the panel. The outer dimension of the aluminium profile brackets is 22 mm. The fasteners were pre-screwed into the groove with countersunk screws.
The next step was to put the LED strips in their correct (a couple of attempts…) positions using the space between the ceiling. The LED strips were connected to pre-attached aluminium profiles. There was only a 4 cm gap between the wall and the ceiling, so the strips could be attached to the profiles thanks to the adhesive surface on the strip.
40 mm glulam boards were sawn to the correct dimensions for the flat lighting and suitable drainage holes were made in them. The LED rail for the lower level was installed and tested before the level was fixed in place. Both the rail driver and the motion sensor were hidden under the AP10 installation box.
The end result was very successful
After the renovation, the space is no longer recognisable as the same. The wall and ceiling have a new panel surface and indirect LED strip lighting circulates around both edges of the wall panel and three edges of the ceiling. The wall panel continues in the ceiling as a single piece, sawn into the yew, which gives a nice canopy-like atmosphere. The three walls of the toilet have been left white to allow the light from the LED strips to reflect off them. The MOON800 CCT is a large LED spotlight that fits very well into a small space. The narrow shelves and small washbasin are suitable for the narrow space, and the Ikea plywood drawer and open basket, which fit in with the interior, are sufficient for storage.
Now after 2 years, the space has become our most photographed destination! – Janne
Price of renovation
A new look was achieved with indirect LED strip lighting. All the accessories used for the lighting, excluding the cost of the work, add up to 930 euros (incl. VAT). Other furniture and accessories cost €1400 (incl. VAT). It took hours of work and the skills of a carpenter, electrician and plumber were needed, as well as a bit of a lighting and interior designer’s eye to get to the end result. No price has been calculated here. The total cost of the equipment was therefore EUR 2326.
