Family Niemelä’s bathrooms include shower and sauna facilities, a toilet and a kitchen with a refrigerator. The versatile space needed new lighting as part of the renovation. For each room, a different type of light was chosen. Here’s some imaginative bathroom lighting.
Innovative LED track lighting for the bathroom
They wanted to invest in lighting in the bathroom, and decided to use LED strip lighting in an innovative way to create both indirect lighting and direct spotlighting. The shape of the space encouraged the use of LED strip lighting to provide even lighting in both directions for the elongated shower space, which opens in two directions.
The profile chosen for the indirect lighting was a bi-directional matt aluminium profile, which allowed the light to open up along the white ceiling. The Led track also indirectly illuminates through the walls. Light was used to create more space in narrow spaces. The profile was fixed to the ceiling with the supplied brackets. The Indirect 2 profile (2500x17x49mm) can accommodate either one or two LED strips. Both lighting directions were used. The LED strip chosen was a Helmeile 14.4 W/m neutral-tinted strip with a high colour rendering index and 1 000 lumens per metre. The colour rendering index, CRI, affects how the room looks. For low quality LED light, e.g. natural skin tones are difficult to reproduce, and the skin may look paler, or else, depending on the quality of the LED, revert to green, grey or blue.
Indirect lighting alone is rarely enough to illuminate a bathroom, so the Niemels, together with Janne from Led Store, considered a solution that would also provide a spotlight in the shower area. It was also hoped that the lights could be dimmed and switched on and off at different times.
The same style as the two-way profile in terms of material and finish was found in the Surface 2 profile. The profile width of 39 mm (profile dimensions 2500x9x39mm) was suitable for the surface of the profile attached to the ceiling. In addition, the mounting brackets for the Surface 2 profile enabled both the attachment to the wall profile and the tight fixing of the Surface 2. So, after much deliberation and testing, it was decided to use a profile for the target lighting that was attached to the Indirect 2. The result was innovative bathroom lighting.
Bathroom lighting ready
The LED strips were connected to their own power supplies to allow indirect and target lighting to be used at different times. Wireless dimmers were chosen as controllers, avoiding the need for new wiring in the walls.
A purely downward pointing led strip in profile is good for bathroom lighting. The profile has two LED strips in parallel, so there is plenty of light output. The light colour temperature of neutral white at 4000 Kelvin emphasises the white freshness of the space.
When the lights are on at the same time, the bathroom is bathed in light. The beautiful textures of the wall tile are elegantly highlighted by the light hitting them.
Quality toilet lighting with LED panel
In the toilet area, which is connected to the bathroom lighting, the lighting was replaced with a high-quality LED panel. This Led Panel 300×300 luminaire provides 1500 lumens of general light, which is plenty of good quality, high colour rendering index light for the toilet. In addition, the light from the mirrored cabinet complements the lighting with light on the face, making the space ideal for beauty treatments, for example.
Dimensional lighting
In the cultivation areas, they wanted practical lighting on the worktop. It was decided to make an LED rail exactly the width of the cabinet under the narrow cabinet. LedStore’s aluminium profiles provided a suitable 45 degree angle profile, on which two LED strips were mounted in parallel. Using the same Helmeile 14.4 W/m 4000K LED strip, the light was harmonious in all spaces.
The rail was made to measure using the popular LedStore LedPaja service. The stylish luminaire package also included a 30W 24V RF (radio frequency) driver for wireless control and a wireless dimmer button.
Narrow wedge of light in the corridor
For the spaces connecting the rooms, the LINJA 2 spotlight was chosen. The small size of this light (mounting aperture only 34x64mm) also solved the challenge of choosing a luminaire for a more challenging space, where the light had to be placed on the ceiling despite the large service hatch.
