Halogen lamps and fluorescent tubes in a rental apartment that had reached the end of their useful life were replaced with new, energy-efficient LEDs. The tenant is satisfied with the end result of the lighting renovation, and the landlord praises the smooth, remote process from design to installation. Coordination between the parties was good.
Lighting renovation for better lighting in rental housing
The halogen lamps, which had been in service for twenty years, were causing the tenant some annoyance, and Kristiina Ilves, the owner of the apartment, took action. He started looking for a replacement solution. The challenge was a broken fluorescent light in the toilet. In the kitchen, they wanted to move away from halogen bulbs to a modern solution, as all the lights would no longer come on, no matter how much the bulb was changed. The burners were also of different pairs. There were also problems with the halogens in the hallway and bedroom.
The starting point for the design of the lighting renovation was the easy installation of the lighting
Kristiina Ilves contacted Led Store, asking for a modern, low energy consuming solution that was also easy to install. Ilves knew to turn to the experts for lighting renovation needs because , as an interior designer, he understood the impact that good lighting has on the comfort of a home. He had previous good experiences with LedStore’s service and products.
No other renovation was planned, as the furniture was otherwise still in good working order. The lighting had to be long-lasting and designed to stand the test of time. The plans were made conveniently by email and phone, even though the client was in Pori, the lights in Vantaa and the renovation site in Espoo.
New lighting in four rooms on a small budget
The kitchen, hallway, bedroom and bathroom are areas where lighting is important. Especially in the hallway and bathroom, there is often little natural light and attention should be paid to the adequacy of lighting. In the kitchen, working comfort is also increased when there is a sufficient amount of good quality light on the worktops. 650 euros were spent on the lights, and the design with the customer was included in the price.
New lighting for the kitchen worktop was achieved by replacing five halogen bulbs with 2.6 metres of LED strip. The power supply for the LED track was connected directly to the electricity, so the new lighting still comes on and off from the same circuit breaker.
Halogen replacement LED bulbs for hallway and bedroom
In the lighting renovation, the halogen bulbs in the hallway were replaced with LedStore 6W LED bulbs, new light frames and a 12V led driver The hallway received more good quality light, as the colour rendering index, CRI, of LedStore’s LED bulbs is top notch.
In the bedroom, the light sources were already positioned above the sliding door in a housing, and the new GU 10-column LedStore LED bulbs fitted directly into the existing mounting holes, as in the hallway. The aluminium light frames were chosen in a silver colour to match the sliding door frame.

In the toilet, the lights were installed on the existing power supply. With its non-fading plastic diffuser and all-aluminium, white-painted body, the LedStore BLADE light is expected to last for more than 10 years. The luminous efficacy of the light is 600 lumens. If the light fails, the power supply can be replaced by LedStore, which means that light is repairable.
Lighting renovation saves electricity and brightens up your apartment
Switching to LED lighting saves electricity. In the bathroom, compared to fluorescent lighting, LED strip lighting with even a bright LED strip consumes about half the electricity. Whereas a 60 cm fluorescent tube consumes 18W, an LED strip of the same length consumes 8.4 W. In the hallway, the LED bulbs (6W) that replaced the halogen bulbs consume about one sixth of the power of a halogen bulb (50W). In the kitchen, the halogen bulbs were replaced with 38W LED strip lighting, which provided even and glare-free lighting for the kitchen levels.
In practice, the switch to LED lighting made it possible to increase the amount of light without increasing electricity consumption, and to switch to high-quality materials. A fluorescent bathroom light fitting at the end of its life had a yellowing dome and replacing it with an light light fitting brought a significant improvement in light quality.
The plastic cover on the surface of the new LED strip installed in the kitchen will not yellow, partly because strip strip produces less heat than halogen. The aluminium LED profile is not only efficient at conducting heat away from the LED strip, but is also a desirable, reusable material at the end of its life.
Compared to halogen bulbs in the hallway, the new halogen-replacing LED bulbs provide about the same amount of light, but their high colour rendering properties contribute to a pleasant light sensation. As the colour rendering index (CRI) increases, the environment looks natural, as it should.
