Home lighting design should be scheduled before or at the same time as electrical design to ensure that the right number of power points are placed in the right places. In a renovation project, where the ceiling and interior walls are being renewed, this is also a good time to upgrade the lighting. Led technology has brought energy efficiency and a wide range of lighting options. Wireless control solutions, on the other hand, allow for versatile lighting control and button positioning. Wireless control has also made lighting timers accessible to all users.
High impact at an affordable price – functionality, safety, comfort
Lighting is not one of the most expensive investments in renovation or house building, but the lighting design of a home has a huge impact on many things: functionality, safety and comfort. That’s why it’s worth taking the time to plan, rather than spending a huge amount of money on good lighting. The rapid development of LED technology over the last 5-10 years has brought with it many options for lighting, but it has also made it more difficult for the layman to compare and choose products. For the best results from your new lighting, design it together with an expert. Convertible, functional general lighting is often achieved with fixed spotlights or panel luminaires, either surface or recessed. LED strip lighting for a more atmospheric and/or efficient working environment is also often fixed. In addition, many wall luminaires require their own power supply point on the wall. This type of implementation, with many fixed luminaires, differs from the so-called traditional, simple model, where a room-by-room design is used to design, for example, a single lighting point on the ceiling, and the occupant is left to choose which pendant luminaire he or she wants to take. In a well-designed general lighting scheme, pendant, table and floor lamps connected to a socket often play a complementary role.
Appropriate lighting for each space
The living room, kitchen and bathroom are usually the rooms in the home where most attention is paid to lighting. The more carefully you choose your interior design and surface materials, the more you should pay attention to quality lighting. Lighting design helps to bring out the details and colours. In the picture below, ZOOM three-phase track lighting has been installed as general lighting in the open-plan living room-kitchen. On top of the island, and on top of the dining table, the spotlights are custom fixtures with LedStore LED bulbs. In addition, on the window wall, a wall-length indirect LED strip lighting system provides uniform light, and is particularly useful in the darker seasons. The lighting is harmonious, as the colour and shapes of the luminaires match each other and the interior.
Home lighting design – bathroom and sauna lighting
Bathrooms and saunas need both spotlighting and mood lighting. Glossy, light-coloured tiles can be used as reflective surfaces for indirect lighting. The darker the walls and floors are, the more light output is needed. Dark surfaces absorb light and light surfaces reflect it. LED strips and spots are available in different wattages and colour temperatures to provide the right lighting level and colour for each space. The picture below shows how light behaves differently in light and dark bathrooms. In both, the flush-mounted spots in the wet room are symmetrically arranged with the showers, and the LED strip in the aluminium profile complements the lighting. The LED strip and spots can be switched on at the same time or separately. They are also dimmable. The alignment of the luminaires gives the whole a sleek look.
Entrance hall lighting
A simple, ceiling-window-shaped panel luminaire is a good choice for a minimalist interior, providing a generous amount of light output. In hallways, it is often necessary to pay attention to the amount of light needed. Entrance hallways need plenty of light to make compact spaces easy to use. The recessed panel luminaire, Panel 600, is ideal for hallways, for example.
Garage and warehouse lighting
It’s worth investing in lighting for garages and storage rooms if they are also used for other purposes, such as hobbies and tinkering. Lighting is a way of making a space more comfortable and at the same time ensuring that there is enough light in the space. A garage/warehouse can be cosy if the lighting is carefully designed. In the space below, a recessed aluminium profile mounted LED strip and recessed Panel 300 luminaires have been used. For additional task lighting in the hobby space, the magnetically attached, rechargeable and cordless Wanda multi-functional luminaire works beautifully.
Outdoor lighting
Home lighting design also includes outdoor lighting. For terrace lighting, good design can produce great results. In the picture, a glare-free flush-mounted LINJA2 spotlight has been chosen to light the terrace. The very narrow and small LINJA2 spotlight creates a fun effect on the floor by alternating light and shadow, bringing life to the floor surface. The narrow beam provides an effective light but does not glare to the sides.
