Summarize
The courtyard lighting should be designed as a cohesive whole, with special attention to the level differences in steps and the terrace. Indirect lighting from walls, trees, and surfaces like stairs helps reduce glare while enhancing the lighting’s usability. Many courtyard lights also come with a dimmer switch, allowing you to adjust the light level to suit the season and your needs.Good lighting for the cottage and yard enhances usability and safety. Many people escape the ‘city lights’ for peace and quiet, and they want that same tranquility from the lighting. Indirect lighting in the summer house gives a nice and peaceful athmosphere.
Indirect lighting – cozy lighting at the cottage
The cottage is often situated in an area with no ambient light from nearby houses or the road. In such cases, even a small amount of light is sufficient. The darker it is around, the less light is needed to provide illumination. Indirect lighting on the exterior walls provides just enough light for walking, but without glare. Take into account that large windows let light spill out at night, providing some illumination to the terrace and courtyard.
FUNK dimmable wall lights work nicely as exterior wall lights . In FUNK wall lights, you can adjust the light beam to your preference. The VIISTO series (right) gives the wall a more curved light pattern. In both of these lights, the light also reaches the surface of the terrace.

Indirect lighting of trees at the cottage
Illuminating trees and plantings provides pleasant indirect lighting. For easy installation, choose ground-mounted lights. This lets you easily position BEAM 9W and 20W lights at the perfect distance with the ground spike and also change the light angle. The light requires electricity (230V). An accessory for the Beam is a pole that raises the light to one meter.

Create a stylish atmosphere on the terrace
A versatile LED strip in an aluminum profile is perfect for lighting a terrace, as the lights blend seamlessly into the structure and provide even lighting on the terrace. If you choose a dimmable driver, you can easily adjust the amount of light to suit your current need. If adding new light switch locations is difficult, a simple solution is wireless control.
For the strip lighting of the covered terrace below, we used LedStore’s high-efficiency HELMI 17 W/m LED strip in a 45 degree aluminium profile, along with a triac driver and a wired dimmer.

Safe passage is especially important to consider when there are height differences and stairs in the yard or on the terrace. For the lighting of a large, open terrace, part of the terrace is illuminated with lights attached to walls and beams. On the outer part of the terrace, where stairs lead in multiple directions, they marked the start of the stairs with LED strip lighting installed in a waterproof aluminum profile beneath the terrace deck.
The LED strip or wall lights do not need to be very powerful, and in this case, the low-power HELMI 7.2 W/m LED strip worked out perfectly. A color temperature of 3,000 Kelvin, which is also pleasant to the eye in the evening, is ideal for wooden surfaces.

Stair lighting near the step surface
Staircases require only a little light, but stair lighting should be carefully planned. You should consider the installation method of the light, its height, beam angle, and power to determine how closely you should place the lights. In the image below, LedStore’s SAUNA series half-moon spots are used, which are recessed into the riser of each step, as the step depth is quite long. The Sauna series spots are very durable and compact, 1 W spots that also come with 5-meter cables, splitters, and and drivers.
