It is important to have a good lighting, especially when applying makeup. This guarantees a good and even end result, with right amount of makeup applied as well as right tones selected. Here we will give you 5 tips to better lighting for your beauty needs.
Makeup lighting at its best has:
- high colour rendering index (CRI), preferably over 90
- suitable colour temperature for your needs
- right amount of light
- light coming from the right angle
- light that suits the interior of your place
1. Good quality light
Having a good light rendering index on the light is crucial when it comes to the light that is supposed to help you to create your perfect makeup. If the CRI is low, it does not show the colour as it should. Skin colour and makeup pigments are easily affected by bad lighting.
We recommend you to choose a light with CRI 90 or over, preferably 93, 95 or even 97. This will make all the blue hues have the right proportions and the natural colours of the skin look just right. Redness of the face might be hard to cover with makeup in a light with low CRI. Low CRI lights tend to give a greenish grey tint to all the colours, skin included.
2. Suitable colour temperature
Cool light that is similar with daylight, has been considered to be perfect for makeup lighting. By daylight, people mostly mean something between 5000K-5800K in light colour temperature. Although, we do believe that you can achieve a good and beautiful makeup lighting with 4000K, natural white light as well.
3. Right amount of light
In bathrooms where you apply makeup or shave, we recommend you to have work space level lighting (approx. 500 lumens/m2). Best results usually result when you combine general lighting, created with led spots or led light panels, with mirror lights or light mirrors. We all experience light brightness (and colour) differently, but we still recommend you to have brighter light rather than too dim light. Or better yet, have the ceiling lighting (regular lighting) dimmable.
4. Lighting from right angle
Making sure that the light comes from a right angle is important, so to avoid unnecessary shadows. We do not recommend adjustable lights as they might create a glare if directed badly (towards the mirror or the face). The best point for spot light is when it is placed in between the person and the mirror, on the ceiling. This, again, to avoid shadows on the face. Light coming indirectly from behind the mirror is usually a good addition to the general lighting, but not enough on its own.
