Led task light with just the right amount of light
The lighting needs of different tasks and different people can be met individually by choosing a large, hanging aluminium profile for the luminaire body, which can accommodate four LED strips in parallel. The aluminium profile and strips can be cut to size, so that the same frame can be used to produce luminaires sized to meet different needs. For example, in an office, you can have longer luminaires on the conference table and shorter ones on the workstations, with a coherent look. The luminaire’s wireless, infinitely variable light output control makes it ideal for height-adjustable workstations. The task light provides a uniform and bright light directly from above and can replace separate desk reading lights.
Amount of light needed at the workstation
To achieve a different amount of illumination at the workstation, choose the right LED strips for the frame and install them at the right distance from the worktop. We measured the effect of the mounting height on the light output when the luminaire has four efficient 17 W/m LED strips in parallel and the length of the luminaire is 1.2 metres. Light levels were measured directly below the luminaire.
- The luminous intensity of 460 lux is achieved when the luminaire is located 2 metres above the worktop.
- The illuminance of 600 lux is achieved when the luminaire is 1.5 m above the worktop.
- The illuminance of 1 000 lux is obtained for a worktop when the luminaire is 1 metre above the worktop.
For reading and precise work, a desk light is needed from about 500 to 1 000 l. The amount of light needed depends on the accuracy of the task and the personal characteristics of the user. The colour of the tabletop also affects the amount of light needed from the luminaire. For example, a black table surface takes up more light than a light-coloured table surface.
The light produced by our task lights is even and bright, which means there are no sharp, distracting shadows. The more pinpointed the light source, the easier it is for shadows and glare to form on the worktop. Our task light is evenly distributed and glare-free, thanks to an opal diffuser that pleasantly diffuses the light. A stepless dimming option helps to control the amount of light.
Parts needed for the installation of a task light
You can get a task light with the LED strips you want. The 14.4 W/m LED strips provide efficient illumination, with a luminous intensity of around 1000 lumens per metre. The Led strip is available in light colours of warm 3 000 Kelvin, neutral 4 000 Kelvin and a CCT strip with colour temperature control, with a colour temperature control range of 2500-6500 Kelvin. Installing four 14.4 W/m strips in parallel on a luminaire one metre long and one metre above the workstation will give a bright task light at full power, about 700 lux.
The Led strip is powered by a transformer. For example, four metres of 14.4 W/m LED strip will work with a 60 watt 24V transformer that fits inside the profile.
The large, hanging aluminium profile is matt white, 2 metres long and 9*8 cm at the end. The LED strip is attached to the profile at a depth of about 2 cm from the opal plastic, so that the light is well distributed and the LED dots do not stand out when the luminaire is viewed from below. The transformer has a 9*6 cm hole, where you can put e.g. A 40 W transformer will fit well. The dimensions of the transformer (width and height) are 5*3 cm.
A wireless switch can be installed as the operating switch if dimmable, individually controllable lighting control is desired. In this case, a wireless receiver is also needed, which is installed inside the profile. The power cable is led to the roof, e.g. through the disk enclosure, allowing wired operation from the desired switches, which are either dimmable (in which case a dimmable triac transformer is selected) or from a basic on/off wall switch. If a CCT adjustable ribbon has been selected, then our VaLO series of wireless controllers will be used, which not only provide dimming but also hue control. The CCT strip allows you to adjust the hue of the white light between 2 500 and 6 500 Kelvin.
Task light ready to assemble by yourself or custom made ready to install
At LedStore we sell profiles that are two metres long and include wires, etc. For example, one profile can make two metre-long luminaires. If you put three LED strips(CCT strip in our online shop) per luminaire, you will need two rolls of LED strip (5 m roll). In addition, transformers are needed for both luminaires, 60W per transformer, and wireless controls, buttons for the CCT tape and wireless receivers for the CCT tape.
The price for these accessories, which will give you two high-quality lamps, is around 768 euros. You will also need (white) furniture cable from an electrical shop and possibly a plug to run the wire from the transformer to the socket or jewellery box, and a thin pair of cables (speaker cable) to connect the ribbons to the transformer and connectors.
If you make a two-metre long task light with a non-colour-adjustable LED strip, three strips per light, with wireless controls, the parts for this will cost around €588.
